ASSEMBLY / TESTING STAGE

Not yet “fully” done

Note:
This will be a very long chapter since this chapter will encompass MUSES-C as she interacts with his Father and seven other Uncles as they build, test, perfect the individual components that will be carried by MUSES-C in her mission to Itokawa. To add flavor to the story, each Uncle will have typical stereotype behaviors usually seen in Anime/Movies/Manga.

LAUNCH STAGE – May 9, 2003

Not yet done

Note:
I still have yet to obtain detailed description of the launch stage so I can’t write a script yet.

NAME CHANGE
Shortly after launch, MUSES-C was informed by her Father that she was given a new name, Hayabusa. (Peregrine Falcon). Her Father explained to MUSES-C (Now Hayabusa) the reason for the name change. Named after Itokawa’s famous Ki-43 and to associate her with the Falcon’s accurate aim while diving towards its prey hoping that she too will have falcon-like accuracy while aiming for Itokawa.

START OF YEAR LONG SWING
Hayabusa-Chan finally started the year long swing. She asked her Father why she needed to bother with such a long journey when she could just go straight to Itokawa. One of her Uncles explained to her in detail why she needed to undergo a year long swing. The explanation started with a brief layman-friendly explanation of the unyielding orbital mechanics involved in the mission (complete with illustrations), the logistics involved in conserving, maximizing and efficiently use the fuel and every available power source and the reason to build enough speed. It was also explained to Hayabusa (again, in laymen-friendly terms) why Itokawa was chosen.

Note:
For this chapter, I still don’t have enough technical understanding of the orbital mechanics. All I know is a vague understanding of the whole swing procedure. More technical detail reference is needed to fully understand this phase of the mission so I can create a more detailed script based on this phase of the mission. Oh and, I will definitely could use a proofreader and technical proofreader for this segment. The ever increasing distance between Hayabusa and Earth will be apparent in the late part of this chapter by the ever increasing daily delay of conversations between Hayabusa and Earth as she slowly reached the Aphelion.

SOLAR FLARE INCIDENT – Late October till early November 2003
Hayabusa-Chan while in the middle of her year long swing maneuver encountered one of the biggest solar flares in recorded history. She was bombarded from late October till early November with a storm of energy and partially fried her Solar Panels, reducing their efficiency to collect power. Mission Control frantically checks to see if Hayabusa-Chan is all right. Despite her battered state, Hayabusa-Chan seems to be somewhat doing fine and continued on course to Itokawa, though now delayed on schedule due to the reduced thrusting power of the ion engines.

Note:
After this chapter and onwards, Hayabusa-Chan will have small parts of her garment torn, parts of her skin partially bruised and burned, holes for the first time will appear in her socks, slightly messed up hair and visible burnt segments of the Solar Panels to give visualization to the ordeal she’s undergone.

END OF YEAR LONG SWING-BY – GRAVITY ASSISTED BY EARTH – May 2004

As Hayabusa-Chan (now with slightly longer hair) is nearing the end of her year long swing with earth clearly in sight, Hayabusa-Chan is glad that the delay in communications is now gone and she can finally have normal conversations once again with her Father and Uncles. She even took a photo of Earth and sent it to her Father as a present. Knowing what Hayabusa-Chan has been through and her current slightly battered state, her worried Father asked her if she’s alright. Hayabusa-Chan replied with a yes followed by a few more conversations between them. Then one by one, her uncles asked her about the current state of each individual component. Though there are a few hiccups, none of them are serious enough to jeopardize the whole mission. After a few more conversations and well wishes, Hayabusa-Chan while somewhat sad about the fact that 3700KM is the closest she could get to home is still glad to be somewhat back home finally received precise maneuvering instructions from one of her uncles and gets into position to initiate the Earth Assisted Gravity Swing. Slow but steadily, with the remaining functioning Ion-Engines on full throttle she accelerated at a rate of 8KM/Second and finally breaks off and head towards Itokawa.

Note:
To make the Earth Gravity Assisted Swing more dynamic, we’ll have to make Hayabusa-Chan take a more aggressive dynamic pose with her back arching facing earth with a fast zooming earth graphic in the background. Speed lines might also be used to illustrate speed.

Note:
This segment might prove to be redundant and will most likely be merged with the “APPROACH TO ITOKAWA” chapter

APPROACH TO ITOKAWA – September 2005
September 2005, Hayabusa-Chan finally was close enough to Itokawa to see it’s bean like overall shape. She received instructions from one of her Uncles to go to the “Gate Position” and maintain a 20KM distance from Itokawa and for nearly two weeks, Hayabusa-Chan is instructed to survey, took photos and lengthy videos of Itokawa and send them back to Earth. After waiting for quite some time, Hayabusa-Chan received a message confirming that the images and videos she sent back to earth was successfully received and received praise from her Father and seven other Uncles. Then she was instructed to dive down and move closer to the “home position” which is about 7KM above Itokawa and same as before, she was instructed to survey, took more photos and more videos of Itokawa and send them back to Earth.

Note:
In the “real” event, the distance between Hayabusa and Earth was so great it takes time for any information/commands to reach Hayabusa thus the need for Autonomous Control. This will be emphasized in the story by Hayabusa-Chan awaiting delayed instructions/replies from her Father/Uncles.
