Tristan & Iseult – A sort of Review, partial dissection and a case of confused identity…

February 9, 2013

You are in for a treat!… For I the HANDSOME UNCLE MUGEN had this massive wall of text and pictures for you to enjoy…

Ehem… So Shakespeare asks… TO OELVN or NOT TO BE OELVN… that is the question…

Today we have one game that fits this… Tristan and Iseult

According to the description given in the Renai Archives… home of the finest OELVN’s on this planet…

A millennium before Romeo and Juliet, another doomed love – that between the Breton Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult – passed into legend. Some of the stories have the pair running off to France to live out their days; in others, they’re both murdered by a jealous husband. Sometimes Tristan is a knight at King Arthur’s court, other times a wandering Pict. Against a backdrop of war between the Irish and the Celtic peoples of ancient Britain, the pair fall in love and play out their respective roles in the fate of the whole of the British Isles.

So without looking at images, it’s safe to assume that this could be an OELVN but alas it is not to be. For it is actually a a hybrid OELVN turning strategy game meant to demonstrate the feasibility of using the Ren’py OELVN Engine besides it’s intended purposes… more on that later… for now let’s focus on the game itself… Read the rest of this entry ?

The Petty Parody – A Parody of a Parody VN!?… WAT!?…

February 5, 2013

So once again I’m on my weekly grind in my never ending quest to improve my BG’s without actually making too much effort (AKA: USE EVERY CHEAP TRICK IN THE BOOK)… I got a little bit bored so I decided to go to Renai Archives and see what OELVN (AKA: ENGLISH VISUAL NOVEL) releases I missed and possibly review and give some exposure… Now unlike most of the Visual Novel related blogs out there who focuses on what was cute, moe, pretty,  polished,  hyped or popular… I, the Handsome Uncle Mugen is more focused on obscure or otherwise really strange and unique OELVN’S (AKA: ENGLISH VISUAL NOVEL) that most people tend to ignore… and boy I have a very good find today…

Grinning heart – A (gulp!) Otome game review by Uncle Mugen

September 9, 2012

Let’s see… this rather short one by ngareci from Lemmasoft forums… (I don’t know if this is an Otome game or Straight but for convenience sake let’s treat this as an Otome) I don’t usually review Otome games let alone go near one since it might damage my macho reputation as Uncle Mugen but I’m pretty bored today and the word count is kinda short which makes it attractive and tempting for me to try it out… Read the rest of this entry ?

Terragen Classic – For people who are too busy/lazy to draw landscape scenery for their VN projects

December 11, 2009

A few days ago, JinzouTamashii introduced me to a program called Terragen Classic. You may be wondering what the fuck is Terragen? Well… to put in in simple terms, it’s a 3D program that can generate large and beautiful landscape scenes quickly and cheaply.

So what does this has to do with Visual Novels you ask? Well… let’s say you need a BG for your VN project say a bunch of mountains. You could either (1) draw it manually, that is… if you could draw. And even if you could draw you probably don’t have much freetime (2) download a photo from the interwebs and use photoshop or any other editing software to filter it beyond recognition. Dirty but fast and does the job but not quite. It looked good but it’s not really flexible enough (3) Use Terragen and let it do the dirty work for you… either because I’m lazy or don’t have freetime…

Let’s take a closer look at this software.
